From
Orphan to Officer
From 1984, JAM's Pambarra Life Centre (20km inland from
Vilanculos) in Mozambique was a JAM orphanage caring for
children orphaned through famine and war. This facility now
serves as a food storage and distribution centre as well as
a training centre for field workers. Over the years we have
had wonderful feedback from some of the children who were
given a chance in life through loving care at this orphanage
and have gone on to become successful.
Alberto Marivatane is a local policeman who was one of the
original orphans at this Life Centre. He was one of 3
siblings found living under a tree after their parents died
during the war and famine period in the 1980’s. He has many
positive recollections of his time at the orphanage, some of
which included learning to read and write, as well as being
given his own Bible. He was delighted to tell us that his
sisters also received an education and are successful today.
After completing his schooling, JAM was instrumental in
assisting Alberto to attend a police college in Maputo,
where he qualified as a police officer, and today carries
the title of “sergeant”. Alberto is proud of his prestigious
position as a policeman, being able to serve and protect his
community.
We are happy to know that we were able to make a difference
in this family's life when they needed it most.
